The technology used with today’s vaping devices has significantly come on leaps and bounds to when the first vaping device was introduced on to the market nearly two decades ago.
If you’re new to vaping, it can be quite confusing on how to set up your first device, and it can even be confusing if you’re someone who’s relatively experienced in setting devices up. This is why I’ve taken the time to write this quick fire guide to setting up your vaping device. And for the sake of this article, I’ll be explaining how to set up an Aspire R1 Refillable Disposable device, which you can purchase right here on Vape69!

Refillable and Disposable…two words that do not traditionally get seen together when it comes to vaping. Disposable Vapes have become all the rage in the last 12 months, with the number of users of these devices reaching record numbers, with millions of these devices being sold in the UK every single week.
Although they are a convenient way to vape as they are very low maintenance, they are not an affordable way to vape nor are they sustainable way to vape, due to the fact they cannot be recycled as they contain a lithium-ion battery meaning they are being dumped into landfills by the millions every single week which is alarming.
Enter Aspire offering a resolution to these problems! And they’ve done this in the form of creating their refillable disposable pod system named the Aspire R1!
Aspire have moved in sync with how technology has advanced, creating new and innovative ideas for their devices. Moving away from the simple designs of well know Vape devices such as the Joyetech eGO, and creating this nifty piece of kit!
This cool device is lightweight and slimline design which is marginally bigger than a standard Disposable device. It also boasts the features of having a 650mah battery which is fully rechargeable via a USB-C cable (included in the box) as well as being refillable with whatever vape juice you choose to use up to 8 times before the coil will “burn out” and the device won’t continue to work from that point.
And the best part? It’s only a couple of quid more than what an Elfbar would cost you! And will last you 8 times longer than a run of the mill Disposable would. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Let’s take a look at how to get one set up.
1 – Charging your Aspire R1 Device
As I mentioned, this device is fully rechargeable meaning you can still use it after the battery runs flat just by putting it on charge, which you can’t do with a Disposable vape like an Elfbar.
The charging port is located on the base of the device and is a USB-C Charging port. As mentioned, the USB-C charging cable is included in the box which is another added bonus! Simply plug the cable into a USB Wall charger plug, and then plug it in to your device and let the charging begin!
Important Tip – Do not use a “fast charging” USB Plug to charge this device, or any other vaping devices.
You may be tempted to use your phone charger plug for example as you’ve got one spare, but this will charge your vape too fast and could lead to the battery cells being killed off by them being overcharged to fast. Check out our handy guide on how to charge a vape safely!
The battery itself is 650mah, and charges very quickly, plus gives a long period of usage before needing a charge!
2 – Filling your Aspire R1 up
Aspire have made it really easy when it comes to refilling the R1 device. If you take a look on the side of the pod part of the device, you’ll see a black rubber bung. Simply flick this down with your fingernail and it will open up a hole where you can put the nozzle of your vape juice bottle into, and simply then fill your pod up and remember to push the bung back in place so your juice doesn’t leak out!
Important Tip – When you fill up your device for the first time, you must leave it for a good couple of minutes prior to using it. This is because the vape juice needs to fully soak in and saturate the cotton of the coil. If you used it too quickly before the cotton is saturated enough, you’ll more than likely burn the cotton of the coil as it’ll be dry and it will ruin the coil and sadly, it’s irreversible.
You’ll know if the cotton isn’t saturated enough as you’ll get a horrible burnt cotton taste that will likely be harsh on your throat, not something you’d willingly want to experience!
3 – Using your Aspire R1
Now we’ve done those two steps, it’s time to actually use your device! When you get the Aspire R1 out of the box and take a look, you might wonder where the fire button is which is normally seen on vaping devices. Well, the R1 simply doesn’t have one as it’s “draw activated” which means there’s no buttons or anything to press, just simply put it to your mouth and inhale and the vapour will be created. This feature is the same as all other disposable devices, with Aspire keeping the similarities in line as much as possible.
Important Tip – Try not to overuse your vape by taking a lot of small sharp consistent inhales as this will not give the coil enough time to heat up properly to function. Instead, just take fewer longer inhales when you vape, and this will avoid the coil becoming flooded with excess juice that’s not been heated up to produce the vapour.
4 – What to do when your device has stopped working
As I mentioned at the start of this article, the Aspire R1 is still effectively a Disposable vaping device, despite it being rechargeable as well as refillable. It has a refill limit of around 8 times before the coil will reach the end of its life and your Aspire R1 will then not function anymore.
Due to this containing a lithium-ion battery, these devices cannot be recycled even though they are made of plastic. Putting these in for recycling could lead to combustion at the recycling plant, and endangering the people who work there.
Please do not simply discard your device on the floor if it stops working while you’re out and about, find the nearest bin, or keep it on you and put it in your bin at home.
And that concludes my handy guide to getting your Aspire R1 set up, as well as using it and what to do when it reaches the end of its life.
I’d highly recommend picking up an Aspire R1 if you’re considering a new device or want to find something to move to use after having used Disposables.
