When you first start vaping, it is pretty exciting. You’ve kicked the habit of what could have been a lifetime, and you’re opting to now do something that will enrich your life and health and give you a much better quality of life.
But with anything new and exciting, there’s always the chance that you’ll get carried away and inadvertently make mistakes which can be easily avoided. In this blog, I’m going to look at some of the most common mistakes people make when starting to vape, and how you can avoid making these mistakes to ensure you get a smooth and plain sailing vaping experience!

Buying an advanced vaping kit from the word go
This is, in my opinion, the most common mistake people make by buying a vape kit that’s far too advanced for them and not right for their needs, especially if they are a new vaper.
When I used to manage a bricks and mortar vape shop, I had no end of customers coming in who were looking to start vaping after quitting smoking, and they’re wanting the big fancy sub ohm kits to blow massive clouds and use all of the rich High VG vape juices to get the most flavour. But I had to talk them out of this, as using these devices will not help them on making the transition from smoking to vaping full time an easy one.
Sub-Ohm vape kits can be quite technical, and tricky to understand, so for someone to pick one up with no previous experience could likely end in failure to successfully transition from smoking to vaping. Getting a starter kit designed for people who want to quit smoking is essential, and try and not be fooled into buying a kit which isn’t suitable for you. Something I’ve sadly known vape shops to do to customers, by encouraging to buy an expensive vape kit to help their till balance rather than helping the customer!
Choosing the wrong Nicotine Strength
Coming in hot is the second most common mistake people make when starting to vape, and that is choosing the wrong nicotine strength that isn’t suitable for what they need. This could mean that they’ve opted for a nicotine strength that is too high, or a strength that is too low, and by doing this, they won’t have success with switching to vaping.
By choosing a nicotine strength that is too high, if the person previously had been used to taking in a lot of nicotine from smoking cigarettes, basically if they were not a heavy smoker, taking in a high nicotine content will likely lead to adverse side effects. These side effects range from nausea, dizziness, or the nicotine can be quite harsh on the throat as well. All of these are very short term, and will not hang around for long so don’t panic!
By choosing a nicotine strength that is too low, your cravings for nicotine will not subside nor be satisfied from using a vape juice that is too low nicotine strength for what you actually need. And if your nicotine cravings are not being satisfied by using your vape, chances are you will likely “dual use” and still smoke to get your nicotine which defeats the object of choosing to vape in the first place!
I highly recommend trying out our range of Vape Bar Salts, which is a range of Nicotine Salt E-Liquid created our by our team of flavour experts, and feature 16 incredible flavours that are inspired by the flavours of Disposable Vapes. Vape Bar Salts are available in 10mg or 20mg nicotine strength and are ideal for any new vaper who wants to make the transition from smoking to vaping as seamless as possible.
Expecting results instantly
If you’ve previously smoked for a long time, switching to vaping is going to be quite the task, there’s no sugar coating it. Changing what might have been a very long habit will not come easy, and it’s absolutely vital that you do not expect too much too soon.
Unfortunately, an e-cigarette isn’t a magic wand, and making the switch successfully can be a bit of a long process, so you don’t want to expect too much to soon as this can be quite disheartening if you don’t get the results you’re expecting. All you have to do is trust the process and take your time with things. You can successfully quit smoking as long as you don’t rush things or expect too much to happen at the click of the fingers.

Using your device at the wrong power
When you get your hands on a vaping device, the first thing that comes to mind is that you’re holding something that can make big plumes of vapour and you can look super cool like everyone else you’ve seen doing it and previously been envious of.
But this isn’t quite necessarily the case, as the device you have may go up to a higher wattage setting, but it all comes down to whether or not the coil in the device is capable of handling the wattage you’re forcing it to work at.
If it can’t, the coil will simply warm up far too quickly, burn the cotton instantly and you’ll get a not so pleasant burnt cotton taste that will likely sting your throat a lot. Trust me, I’ve done this so I’m speaking from experience!
Respect your device and only use it on the correct power setting that is suited for your coil! Speaking of coils…
Change your coil regularly!
Look at a coil as you would the heart in the human body…if it’s not working properly and at optimal levels, you’re gonna face some problems! And this is exactly the case if you don’t look after your coils and change them regularly.
Most coils have a life span of around 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer, depending on how much you use your device. If you’re a heavy vaper constantly puffing away, your coil will be on the shorter end. And if you’re a bit more of a conservative vaper, then it will last you the expected 2 weeks if not longer.
You’ll know when you need to change your coil as your e liquid won’t quite taste right, and you might get a bit of a burnt cotton taste when you have a puff. This is the telltale sign that you MUST change your coil at this point. Don’t try and drag it out to get a bit more life out of it, just dip your hand in your pocket and buy a new coil and you’ll be sorted!

Not following ‘vaping etiquette’
There’s some unwritten rules about vaping etiquette, and it’s worth taking a look into it and ideally following it to ensure you’re not annoying anyone around you!
Try not to vape in enclosed spaces, especially if you’ve got a cloud machine, because as much as you like the taste and smell of your vape juice, people around you might not!
Respect the rules. This means don’t vape anywhere where you’re not allowed to. Stealth vaping is quite a common thing, but could likely land you in more trouble than it’s worth by having a sneaky puff.
And don’t blow your clouds in people’s faces. I’m sure you wouldn’t have done this with cigarette smoke, so don’t do it with your vapour clouds! Whilst second hand vapour hasn’t been proved to be harmful to people like what second hand cigarette smoke is, it’s still not very pleasant for someone to get a face full of when they least expect or want it!
